Some of the legislation which applies:

THE CORPORATE MANSLAUGHTER AND CORPORATE HOMICIDE ACT 2007, which came into effect on
6 April 2008, means companies can be prosecuted where a fatality results from a serious breach in the management of the duty of care in respect to Health & Safety.

HEALTH & SAFETY AT WORK ACT 1974 requires an employer to provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health & safety at work of his employees

PUWER - PROVISION AND USE OF WORK EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS 1998 - requires that equipment provided for use at work is: suitable for the intended use, safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training

THE LIFTING OPERATIONS AND LIFTING EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS 1998 (LOLER) requires that any lifting equipment used at work for lifting or lowering loads is: used safely, ie the work is planned, organised and performed by competent people; and subject to ongoing thorough examination and, where appropriate, inspection by competent people
